About the Bourne Society

The Society was founded in 1956, and takes it's name from the underground streams that flow in the area
along the lines of the A22  and A23  roads
The Society began with a core of a dozen or so fully active members
There are now 1823 members, and the Society is considered to be probably the largest of its kind in the UK
We cover the history of Caterham, Chaldon, Chelsham, Chipstead
Coulsdon, Farleigh, Godstone, Kenley, Sanderstead, Whyteleafe, Warlingham, and Woldingham
We are able to help newcomers to the area to satisfy their curiosity, and to stimulate residents to
search out information
The Society seeks to place the area in a historical perspective
This is does through it's publications, visits, speakers, meetings, placement of plaques, and archaeological work
It is a registered charity, and as well as general work, it has active special-interest groups
These include Archaeology, Industrial Archaeology, Photography, Pub and Landscape History
Membership is open to individuals, families, and organisations

Membership cost £10.00 per year, and includes a quarterly edition of Local History Records (incorporating the
Bourne Society Bulletin)’
