James Cockburn Batley  -1982

Not one of the founder members, but his enthusiasm from the early days launched countless ventures concerned with the study of local history

His ideas included the tape recording of local inhabitants, the inauguration of the Local History Records, of which he was editor in 1961 - 1972, and in 1976, promotion of flights over our area, development of evening classes in local history

It was his suggestion that the ancient name of Tandridge was given to our newly formed District Council

He was instrumental in recovering the 1736 Rowed Map from Canada, and was foremost in the founding of the East Surrey Museum

He was Chairman in 1971 to 1976, and a Vice-President from 1977
